Chapter 2
Crush (part1)

“Emily!” I shrieked as she took me into her arms. Blake raised his eyebrow and muttered something under his breath. “Oh my gosh, Layla! I’ve missed you so much!” We were still hugging each other, now jumping outside my house. “So did I. So sorry that I didn’t go to the airport yesterday.” I pulled away, giving her an apologetic look as she ruffled my light brown hair. “It’s alright, and Paris was great!” She sounded so cheerful as we walked towards Blake’s Volkswagen. “You wouldn’t know what happened last Sunday.” I smiled smugly as we got into the car. It still slightly reeked of Vodka. “How exciting could it get?” She asked warily. Blake started the engine and threw the car into reverse. “I went to a pub, and drank and danced with Jayden!” I was practically screaming now. “Cut it out, Layla.” Blake barked. Emily dropped her jaw and her eyes grew wide with jealousy. “Oh my gosh! Jayden Laurent? Jayden? Jayden?” She held my wrists tightly and was bobbing up and down with excitement. Well, Emily did have a crush on Jayden. “Yeah. Jayden Laurent.” I tried to sound cool. “I am so envious of you, Layla!” She clutched her palms to her heart. I just smiled. “Next time, you’ve got to bring me along.” She broke into a wide grin. Then, Blake turned to look at us as he drove into the school car park. “She’s got grounded for one month cause of that damn incident.” Blake said sourly. “Yeah. Can’t go over your house today.” The tinge of disappointment and regret lingered in my voice as I stared out of the window blankly. Spring break was finally over. School looked pretty the same to me, I thought as we flashed past the cars and students chattering in crowds. “Damn. That’s simply too sad.” She slapped her knee as we got of the white Beetle. I nodded as we made our way to the school building. Then, I caught a glance of Jayden. He was surrounded by several girls, as usual. When I walked past, he didn’t even notice. My light beige oversized sweatshirt and jeans were totally different from the vintage white sundress, I thought sourly.

During lunch, in the cafeteria, it was all the same. Abigail and Davidson headed the table; obviously the highest of the clique. Then, there was Kim, Pearl, Zac, and Ethan. Everyone there were part of the coolest clique in the school. And sitting next to Pearl was someone vaguely familiar. I ransacked my memory for the dark curtain of brown hair, the glimmering blue eyes when she chuckled and the flawless figure. It was Ashley. Why in the world was she here? “What’s wrong, Layla?” Emily caught me staring at the clique’s table. I could detect the tinge of sarcasm in her voice. “Is that a new girl?” Emily followed my stare on Ashley. “Yeah. She was in my Spanish. I think her name is Ashley.” Emily noted as she grabbed a pizza from the counter. “Emily, she was the same Ashley at the bar!” I threw my hands up in the air. “Oh my gosh. Go talk to her, then.” Emily nearly shoved me out of queue. “There’s no way am I going to dump my best friend for the indecent flirt.” Did I really mean that? Was Emily way better than Ashley? It’d better be. I took a bottle of lemonade from the fridge and paid for it. Emily smiled sweetly. Then, she suddenly went rigid. “Freak! It’s Jayden Laurent!” I could hear the tickling rush of air as she whispered excitedly into my ear. “Cut the crap, Emily.” I commanded her when she hid her face in my curtain of hair as we sauntered to the table where we usually sat, now with the gorgeous Jayden smiling at us. Surprisingly, he didn’t join his clique’s table today. I raised my eyebrow. He shot a quizzical look back. “Cut the wordless communication!” Emily whispered again as she tugged at my wrist. “Hey ladies, mind if I join you for lunch?” Jayden asked in a honey-sweet voice. Emily’s eyes widened when he mentioned ‘ladies’ and she darted a quick look behind her. “No problem,” I answered hastily and demanded dreamy Emily to take a seat.

“I’m going to faint, Layla.” Emily whispered teasingly. “Cut it out!” I hissed when her fingernails made marks on my arm. Reluctantly, she let go and took a large bite of her mozzarella pizza. I opened the bottle of lemonade and sipped it. Jayden nibbled on his double chocolate muffin. It was silent for the next few minutes. “Talk to him, you idiot.” Emily hissed furiously into my ear. I sighed. “So what’s the occasion? Why aren’t you sitting with your clique?” There was a tinge of unplanned sourness in my voice. “I can’t stand them. That’s why I’m hanging out with your brother and Nicholas.” He admitted with a hint of disappointment in his voice. “You don’t know how lucky you are. The clique, you know.” I muttered as I rolled my eyes. “Pardon?” “People die to join the clique and now you’re alienating from them…” Disapproval was distinct in my acid voice. “You don’t know anything. Let’s leave it to that.” He sealed the topic. That made me even more pissed off with him. “I don’t know what his bloody problem is.” I muttered fiercely into Emily’s ears. “There’s nothing wrong with him.” She snapped, blushing when Jayden shot her a quizzical look. I sighed. In Emily’s world, a cute hot guy like Jayden was flawless. “So what’s your next class?” Jayden asked, trying to ease my irritation. “Microbiology and Gym,” Ugh. I groaned internally. “Didn’t know why I picked the bloody science.” I rattled off. “So, I’ll be sharing the same classes as you!” He smiled warmly. His smile was irresistible. I gave one of my most alluring smiles even though I was cursing that I had class with him. Then, we debated about the bestselling books, music and the damn microbiology holiday assignment. To my surprise, he wasn’t anything like the clique. Most of the bitches and bastards were the filthy rich kids who don’t give a damn about studying. Only Pearl bothers; that’s why she’s some president of some freak science club. And Jayden was smart, I must admit. I liked him for that one. And for his smiles. And kisses.
